Off-Peak (Jun-Aug): Monsoon means empty attractions (except hill stations). Kerala backwaters are magical in rain!
Dress modestly, especially when visiting temples or interacting with locals. Loose-fitting cotton clothing is best for the climate. For temples, ensure shoulders and knees are covered. Footwear must be removed before entering temples.
ATMs are available in the town center but may not always be functional or stocked. UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is widely accepted at larger shops, but cash is king for small vendors and street food. Currency exchange is not available here; do it in Hyderabad. Tipping is not customary in small eateries but appreciated for good service.
Drink only bottled water or filtered water. Avoid tap water. Carry basic medications for fever, pain, and stomach issues. Vaccinations for Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended. The nearest well-equipped hospital is in Karimnagar (40km).
Local SIM cards (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea) are available but require ID proof and can take time to activate. Wi-Fi is rare outside of a few guesthouses. Useful apps include Google Maps for navigation and a basic translation app. Telugu is the local language; Hindi and some English are understood by educated locals.
Script changes every few states - Devanagari in the north, Bengali/Assamese script in the east, Dravidian scripts in the south. Street signs can be unreadable.
Regional festivals close businesses differently - Durga Puja shuts down Kolkata for days, but life continues normally in Mumbai. Research local festival calendars.
Onam is Kerala's harvest festival - August/September celebration with flower carpets, boat races, and elaborate vegetarian feasts called sadya.
Pace of life changes dramatically - Frenetic in Mumbai and Delhi; relaxed in Kerala and Goa; moderate in tier-2 cities across different states.
End your journey in Varanasi - The holy city on the Ganges is overwhelming but transformative—a fitting conclusion to witness life, death, and rebirth along the ghats.
Gender dynamics shift between states - Kerala has better women's literacy and social indicators; some northern states remain more conservative and restrictive.
Bihu festivals mark Assam's seasons - Three different Bihu celebrations throughout the year reflect agricultural cycles with traditional music and dance.
Accent differences in English are significant - South Indian English has different pronunciation than North Indian English. Both differ from British/American English.
South Indian punctuality is relatively better - Events and services tend to start closer to scheduled times in the south compared to northern "IST" (Indian Stretchable Time).
South Indian breakfast is entirely different - Idli, dosa, vada, and upma with sambar and chutney replace the parathas and chai of the north.
Standing close while queuing is tolerated - In lines or crowds, standing near each other is acceptable and practical.
Kissing is absolutely taboo - Even a peck on the cheek in public can cause serious problems, from verbal harassment to police intervention.
Meditation retreats offer intensive practice - Vipassana centers provide 10-day silent meditation courses, completely free (donation-based).
Take at least one long-distance train journey
Mosquito-borne disease risk changes - Malaria risk higher in Odisha and northeastern states; dengue spikes in Delhi's monsoon; Kerala has different disease patterns.
