seasonPeak Season (Oct-Mar): Pleasant weather but massive crowds at all major sites. Book everything in advance.
Shoulder Season (Apr-May, Sep): Best balance - decent weather, moderate crowds, better prices.
Off-Peak (Jun-Aug): Monsoon means empty attractions (except hill stations). Kerala backwaters are magical in rain!
Dress in layers, as temperatures can change quickly. Carry warm clothing, even in summer, for evenings. For trekking, wear sturdy hiking boots, waterproof jackets, and rain gear. Modest clothing is appropriate for visiting monasteries.
ATMs are very limited in Rimbik, often out of cash or non-functional. Carry sufficient cash (rupees) for your entire trip. UPI payments are not widely accepted. Currency exchange facilities are non-existent. Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated for guides and homestay hosts.
Drink only bottled water or boiled water provided by homestays. Carry basic first-aid supplies, including medicines for headaches, stomach issues, and altitude sickness. The nearest proper medical facility is in Darjeeling, so be prepared for emergencies. Consult your doctor about vaccinations before travel.
Mobile network coverage is patchy. BSNL and Jio generally have better reception than Airtel or Vodafone. Wi-Fi is rare and unreliable in homestays. Inform your family about limited connectivity. Nepali, Bengali, and Hindi are widely spoken; basic English is understood by some. Useful apps include offline maps.
