Sports rivalries cross state lines - Cricket IPL teams represent states/cities. Wearing wrong team colors in rival territory invites playful (or serious) teasing.
Artist residencies offer creative spaces - Programs exist for writers, painters, and other artists to work in inspiring Indian environments.
UPI adoption differs regionally - Nearly universal in Karnataka and Maharashtra, but still limited in some rural areas of Bihar or northeastern states.
Caste dynamics vary by state - More prominent and rigid in some northern states, less defining in urban south and northeast where tribal identities matter more.
Attend a classical music or dance performance - Kathak, Bharatanatyam, or Carnatic music concerts showcase India's refined artistic traditions.
Dress conservatively in conservative areas - Research your destination. What's acceptable in Goa isn't in rural Rajasthan or small temple towns.
Backup photos regularly - Internet cafes and shops can transfer photos to hard drives or cloud storage. Don't risk losing everything.
Sleep on palace rooftops - Some heritage properties and hostels offer rooftop sleeping in summer—magical under the stars.
"Veg" and "non-veg" are the main categories - Restaurants clearly mark which items contain meat or eggs versus purely vegetarian options.
Meditation retreats offer intensive practice - Vipassana centers provide 10-day silent meditation courses, completely free (donation-based).
Goan culture is more relaxed about alcohol - Beach culture and Portuguese Catholic influence make Goa's attitude toward drinking very different from conservative states.
Bengali cuisine centers on fish - West Bengal and Bangladesh border regions have fish-based dishes unlike anywhere else in India.
