bookingPeak Season (Oct-Mar): Pleasant weather but massive crowds at all major sites. Book everything in advance.
Shoulder Season (Apr-May, Sep): Best balance - decent weather, moderate crowds, better prices.
Off-Peak (Jun-Aug): Monsoon means empty attractions (except hill stations). Kerala backwaters are magical in rain!
Modest clothing is highly recommended due to the rural and conservative nature of the area. Cover your shoulders and knees, especially when visiting temples or villages. Light cotton clothes are suitable for most of the year. Carry a light jacket or shawl during the winter months (October to February).
ATMs are available in Jamtara town but may be scarce or unreliable in smaller villages. UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is widely accepted in town for digital payments. Carry sufficient cash for small purchases, street food, and transport in rural areas. Currency exchange facilities are not readily available; exchange money in major cities before arriving. Tipping is not customary for small services.
Always drink bottled water or water from a trusted filter. Avoid tap water. Carry basic medications for common ailments like headaches, stomach upsets, and fever. The nearest well-equipped hospitals are in Dhanbad or Asansol for serious medical emergencies. Consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations for India before your trip. Protect yourself from mosquitoes.
Local SIM cards (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea) are available in Jamtara town with valid ID (passport and visa for foreigners). Wi-Fi is rare outside of a few basic hotels. Useful apps include Google Maps for navigation and a translation app for Hindi or Bengali. Hindi and Bengali are widely spoken; English is not commonly understood by locals.
Thali composition changes by state - A Gujarati thali includes farsan and sweets; a South Indian thali has sambar and rasam; a Rajasthani thali features bajra roti.
Numbers are written differently - Indian numbering uses lakhs (100,000) and crores (10,000,000). Get familiar with these terms.
Finish your plate to show appreciation - Leaving food can indicate you didn't enjoy it, though this varies by family and region.
Avoid meat from street vendors
Jain food avoids root vegetables and is purely vegetarian
Amritsar is known for exceptional meat dishes
Participate in langar at gurdwaras - Free community meals at Sikh temples are open to all. It's a beautiful experience of equality and service.
Western Ghats are a biodiversity hotspot
Train platform numbers change frequently - Always check the electronic boards or ask railway staff, even if your ticket shows a platform number.
Bread is used as an edible utensil - Tear off pieces of roti, naan, or paratha to scoop up curries and dals.
Noise levels vary dramatically - Request rooms away from main roads, temples (loudspeakers!), or wedding halls for better sleep.
Try masala chai everywhere
Heritage hotels offer unique experiences - Former palaces and havelis converted to hotels provide authentic royal atmosphere, especially in Rajasthan.
Negotiate at jewelry stores carefully - Get everything weighed and tested. Bring a trusted local if buying significant pieces.
