Dress modestly, especially when visiting temples or interacting with locals. For women, traditional Indian wear like salwar kameez or sarees is appropriate. For men, shirts and trousers are fine. Avoid revealing clothing. Comfortable cotton clothes are best for the climate.
ATMs are not available in Ilaiyur itself. You must withdraw cash in Tirunelveli or Madurai. UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is widely accepted in larger towns but less so in small village shops. Carry enough cash for your stay. Tipping is not customary in small eateries but appreciated for good service at homestays.
Drink only bottled water or filtered water provided by your homestay. Carry basic medications for fever, pain, and stomach issues. There are no major hospitals in Ilaiyur; the nearest facilities are in Tirunelveli. Consult your doctor about vaccinations before travel.
Indian SIM cards (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea) offer good coverage in most areas, but network strength might vary in remote parts of Ilaiyur. Wi-Fi is generally not available in village homestays; check with your host. Useful apps include Google Maps and a translation app. Tamil is the local language; a few locals might understand basic English.
UPI adoption differs regionally - Nearly universal in Karnataka and Maharashtra, but still limited in some rural areas of Bihar or northeastern states.
Seek quiet spaces like botanical gardens and parks
Noise levels vary dramatically - Request rooms away from main roads, temples (loudspeakers!), or wedding halls for better sleep.
Block-printed textiles are beautiful - Jaipur and Rajasthan are famous for hand-block printing. Watch artisans work before buying.
Visit Hampi for stunning boulderscape landscapes

Shared auto-rickshaws follow fixed routes - These are incredibly cheap but only go along predetermined paths. Ask locals about the routes.
