ATMs are available in Hemtabad town center but may be limited. It is advisable to carry enough cash (rupees) for daily expenses. UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is widely accepted at shops. Currency exchange facilities are not available; exchange money in Kolkata or Raiganj. Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated for good service (rupees 20-50).
Drink only bottled water or filtered water. Avoid tap water. Carry basic medications for common ailments. Consult your doctor about vaccinations before travel. The nearest well-equipped hospital is in Raiganj, 25km away. Be cautious with street food hygiene.
Major Indian SIM cards (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea) work in Hemtabad, but network coverage might be patchy in very remote areas. Wi-Fi is rare outside of a few guesthouses in Raiganj. Useful apps include Google Maps for navigation and UPI apps for payments. Bengali is the local language; Hindi is understood by many. English speakers are rare outside of educated youth.
Dancing together in public is context-dependent - At clubs and parties it's fine; spontaneous street dancing will attract massive crowds and possible harassment.
Crime rates differ dramatically by state - Kerala and Northeastern states generally safer; some northern cities have higher crime. Research before visiting.
Giving and receiving uses the right hand - Or both hands together. The left hand is traditionally associated with bathroom hygiene.
