Gangotri, nestled in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site. It marks the origin of the holy River Ganges, though the actual source is at Gaumukh glacier, a further 19 km trek.
Gangotri offers stunning Himalayan scenery and a deeply spiritual atmosphere. However, the high altitude (3,100m) can be challenging for some, and the facilities are basic. The town is crowded during peak pilgrimage season, and the weather can be unpredictable.
Reaching Gangotri requires travel from Dehradun or Rishikesh, with the last stretch by road. Plan for at least two days to acclimatize and explore the main sites. Consider extra days for trekking to Gaumukh.
May to June
10-20 degrees C
Pleasant and sunny during the day, cool nights. Clear skies offer excellent views of the surrounding peaks.
Why Visit:
This is the start of the pilgrimage season, with relatively stable weather. The temperatures are moderate for trekking. The valley is lush and green before the monsoon rains.
Tip: Expect large crowds of pilgrims. Book accommodation and transport well in advance.
September to October
5-15 degrees C
Cool and crisp with clear skies. The monsoon has receded, leaving the landscape refreshed.
Why Visit:
Fewer crowds compared to May-June, and the weather is still good for trekking. The autumn colors add to the scenic beauty.
Tip: Nights can be quite cold, so pack warm clothing. Some facilities might start closing down towards the end of October.
November to April
-5 to 5 degrees C
Extremely cold with heavy snowfall. Gangotri is usually inaccessible during this period due to road closures.
Why Avoid:
Avoid visiting during these months due to harsh weather conditions and limited access. The area is prone to avalanches and landslides.
Note: Gangotri remains closed to pilgrims during the winter months. No accommodation or facilities are available.
