Smart strategies to beat the rush and experience destinations peacefully
Explore lesser-known temples and monuments in the same city
alternativesVisit monuments at opening time (usually 6-7 AM) to avoid tour groups
timingAvoid Indian national holidays - monuments become extremely crowded
timingExplore North India in summer when most tourists flee to hill stations
seasonSunset visits are less crowded than sunrise at most attractions
timingExplore lesser-known national parks instead of Ranthambore/Jim Corbett
alternativesChoose Ajanta over Ellora Caves - slightly less tourist traffic
alternativesPeak Season (Oct-Mar): Pleasant weather but massive crowds at all major sites. Book everything in advance.
Shoulder Season (Apr-May, Sep): Best balance - decent weather, moderate crowds, better prices.
Off-Peak (Jun-Aug): Monsoon means empty attractions (except hill stations). Kerala backwaters are magical in rain!
Light, breathable cotton clothing is best for most of the year due to heat and humidity. For temple visits, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. No specific dress code for general city areas, but conservative attire is always respected.
ATMs are widely available throughout Dum Dum and Jessore Road. UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is very common for digital payments; most shops accept it. Currency exchange can be done at the airport or banks. Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated for good service (rupees 50-100 at restaurants).
Drink only bottled water or filtered water. Avoid ice in drinks from street vendors. Carry basic medications for stomach upsets. Consult your doctor about vaccinations before travel. Several hospitals are available in Dum Dum and nearby areas for emergencies.
Local SIM cards (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea) are easily available at the airport or local stores with your passport and visa. Wi-Fi is common in hotels and some cafes. Useful apps include Google Maps, Uber/Ola, and local food delivery apps. Bengali is the local language, but Hindi and English are widely understood.
