seasonPeak Season (Oct-Mar): Pleasant weather but massive crowds at all major sites. Book everything in advance.
Shoulder Season (Apr-May, Sep): Best balance - decent weather, moderate crowds, better prices.
Off-Peak (Jun-Aug): Monsoon means empty attractions (except hill stations). Kerala backwaters are magical in rain!
Dress modestly and conservatively. For women, traditional Indian attire like salwar kameez or sarees is appropriate. For men, shirts and trousers are suitable. This shows respect for local culture, especially when visiting temples.
ATMs are not available in Asarganj. The nearest ATMs are in Siwan town, about 20km away. Carry sufficient cash in small denominations (rupees 10, 20, 50, 100). UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is widely used in India, but its acceptance in a small village might be limited to larger shops in Siwan. Currency exchange is only possible in major cities like Patna.
Drink only bottled water or water from a trusted filter. Avoid street food that looks unhygienic. Carry basic first-aid supplies. For serious medical emergencies, you will need to go to Siwan town, where basic hospitals are available. Consult your doctor about necessary vaccinations before travel.
Major Indian SIM cards (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea) generally have network coverage in Asarganj, though it might be patchy. Purchase a SIM card at the airport or in Siwan with a valid ID. Wi-Fi is unlikely to be available. Hindi and Bhojpuri are the primary languages. Learning a few basic phrases will be helpful.
Dancing together in public is context-dependent - At clubs and parties it's fine; spontaneous street dancing will attract massive crowds and possible harassment.
Drinking water with meals is common - Always have water nearby when eating spicy food. Lassi or buttermilk also help cool the burn.
ATMs frequently run out of cash - Especially on weekends and holidays, ATMs can be empty. Withdraw money during weekday mornings and always keep backup cash.
Cycle rickshaws are for very short distances - Best for old city areas where motorized vehicles can't reach, but negotiate price firmly beforehand.
Avoid gem scams completely - Stories about buying gems cheap to resell at home are always scams. Never fall for this.
Remove shoes before entering temples - Always. Look for shoe racks outside or follow what others do. Some places offer paid shoe storage.
Touching someone's head is offensive - The head is considered sacred in Hindu culture. Never pat anyone's head, even children's.
Indian Standard Time includes delays - Events often start 15-30 minutes late. This is culturally accepted, though changing in urban areas.
Holi is messy but incredible - The color festival in March involves colored powder and water fights. Wear old clothes and protect cameras.
Expect the selfie requests to get tiring
