🗂️ How to Apply — Step by Step

  1. 1

    Check Eligibility

Confirm your nationality is on the e-Visa eligible list — currently open to citizens of 160+ countries. Your passport must have at least 6 months validity beyond your travel date and at least 2 blank pages.

  2. 2

    Gather Your Documents

Prepare a scanned colour copy of your passport bio-data page, a recent colour photograph (white background, square format), and supporting documents relevant to your sub-type — flight itinerary, hotel booking, business invitation, or hospital appointment letter.

  3. 3

    Apply at the Official Portal

Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in and complete the online application form. Double-check every field — your name, date of birth, and passport number must exactly match your travel document. You can save and return within 72 hours to complete the form.

  4. 4

    Pay the Application Fee

Pay online with a Visa, MasterCard, or American Express card. Fees vary by nationality and sub-type. Save the payment receipt and transaction reference number — you will need them to track application status.

  5. 5

    Wait for Your ETA

Processing typically takes 72–96 hours. You will receive the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) by email. Do not book non-refundable tickets until the ETA is confirmed. During peak travel seasons allow 4–5 business days.

  6. 6

    Print and Travel

Print a colour copy of the ETA on A4 paper and carry it throughout your journey. Present it at airline check-in and at the Indian immigration counter on arrival. Your first port of entry must be one of the designated e-Visa airports or seaports.

Official Portal

Apply only at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Third-party websites may charge inflated fees for the same application.

📌 Important Rules & Common Mistakes

🔒

No Visa Conversion Inside India

You cannot change your visa category after entering India. If you need a different type, exit India and apply at an Indian Mission abroad.

⏱️

FRRO Registration for Long Stays

If your stay exceeds 180 days, you must register with the FRRO/FRO within 14 days of crossing that threshold. Registration is done online at ivfrt.gov.in.

🚫

Overstaying is a Serious Offence

Overstaying your authorised period results in fines, detention, deportation, and potential bans on future India travel. Always depart on or before the last day of your authorised stay.

🖨️

Always Carry Your Visa Document

e-Visa holders should carry a printed colour copy of the ETA throughout the trip. Sticker-visa holders must present their passport at all checkpoints. Always keep copies of supporting documents.
