Ooty Guide – Tea Gardens, Nilgiri Mountain Railway & the Queen of Hill Stations (2026)!

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train from Mettupalayam climbs 1,712 metres in 46 km — the steepest rack-and-pinion railway section in Asia — taking 4.5 hours to do what a car does in 90 minutes. Through the Coonoor tunnel, out into tea gardens rolling across every hill in every direction, past waterfalls, around hairpin bends, stopping at Victorian station buildings unchanged since 1899. You arrive in Ooty with coal smuts on your jacket and something close to irrational happiness. This is the best way to arrive anywhere.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway — UNESCO Toy Train {#nilgiri-train}

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is not called a toy train because it’s small — it’s called that because of its narrow gauge (metre gauge) tracks and steam power. The line runs from Mettupalayam (at the base of the Nilgiris, 328 m) to Ooty (2,240 m) — a climb of 1,912 metres in 46 km, including the steepest rack-and-pinion railway section in Asia.

The rack-and-pinion system: The steepest section (Mettupalayam to Coonoor) uses a rack-and-pinion gear engagement where a cogwheel on the locomotive engages a toothed rail between the running rails — allowing the train to climb gradients up to 1:12 (8.33%) that no adhesion-only locomotive could manage.

UNESCO inscription: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005 as part of the “Mountain Railways of India” inscription (alongside the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Kalka–Shimla Railway).

The journey experience:

Practical tips: Book in advance via IRCTC (train number 56136 Mettupalayam–Ooty Nilgiri Passenger). The first class coach (limited seats; heritage style wooden seats; windows) is the way to ride this. Departs Mettupalayam approximately 7:10 AM; arrives Ooty by 11:45 AM.

The other option: Ooty–Coonoor section only (much shorter, quicker, more flexible) — good if you can’t do the full journey.

The Tea Gardens of the Nilgiris {#tea-gardens}

The Nilgiri Hills produce one of India’s most distinctive tea — Nilgiri tea has a slightly floral, brisk, high-aroma character different from both Darjeeling (muscatel, lighter-bodied) and Assam (malty, strong). The altitude (1,500–2,500 m), rainfall, and temperature range produce these characteristics.

Tea garden walks: The most accessible tea garden walking is on the road between Coonoor and Kotagiri (20 km from Ooty) — kilometres of uninterrupted tea bushes with the Nilgiri ridgeline above and valley mist below.

Tea factory visits: Several factories welcome visitors: Korakundah Tea Factory (one of the highest tea gardens in India at 2,300 m), Thornfield Tea Factory near Coonoor. Watch the withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, and grading process — the smell of a working tea factory is extraordinary.

Buying tea: The local market in Ooty and the tea factory shops sell fresh Nilgiri tea directly. Orange Pekoe grade and the specialty FTGFOP (Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe) grades are the premium options.

Doddabetta Peak — Highest Point in the Nilgiris {#doddabetta}

9 km from Ooty

Doddabetta at 2,637 metres is the highest peak in the Nilgiri Hills and the highest peak in Tamil Nadu. The approach road from Ooty leads through dense shola forest (the specific montane tropical forest of the Nilgiris, with a closed canopy of short, twisted trees).

The summit has a telescope house (very basic; nominal charge), a small tourist kiosk, and — on clear days — views that extend to the plains below (Coimbatore, Mettupalayam) and across the entire Nilgiri plateau.

When to visit: Morning is the best chance of clear visibility before mist builds. The peak is frequently cloud-covered by 10 AM. Go early or you’ll be standing in cloud.

Avalanche — The Shola Forest Valley {#avalanche}

22 km from Ooty; 45 minutes by road

Avalanche is one of the Nilgiris’ best-kept relatively accessible secrets — a valley in the upper Nilgiris where a large lake is surrounded by shola forest (twisted montane forest) and grassland. The landscape, in certain conditions, looks more like New Zealand hill country than India.

Controlled access: Avalanche is within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and requires payment of a permit (₹50–100 per person; the forest checkpost manages entry). Numbers are limited.

The lake: Avalanche Lake (a reservoir) has trout fishing (permit required; inquire at forest office). The walk around the lake through shola forest is excellent for Nilgiri birds.

Nilgiri Tahr: The endemic wild goat of the Nilgiris — stocky, dark coated, found on rocky grassland slopes above 1,800 m. The Eravikulam National Park (Kerala side, near Munnar) has the densest population inside a protected reserve, but Nilgiri Tahr are also seen in the Western slopes of the Nilgiris accessible from Ooty.

Coonoor — Ooty’s Quieter Neighbour {#coonoor}

18 km from Ooty; 45 minutes

Coonoor at 1,800 metres is in the Nilgiris but significantly quieter than Ooty. It’s the mid-station on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the town many choose as a base for the less crowded experience.

Highlights from Coonoor:

Staying in Coonoor: Less crowded than Ooty; several very good heritage bungalows and homestays in the tea estate areas; recommended for quality over the Ooty hill station experience.

Mudumalai National Park — Tiger Reserve Below the Hills {#mudumalai}

67 km from Ooty; 1.5–2 hours via Gudalur road (descending to the valley)

Mudumalai National Park (now a Tiger Reserve) sits at the foot of the Nilgiri Hills — the steep descent from Ooty to Gudalur follows the elephant migration corridor from the hills to the plains. Mudumalai is contiguous with Bandipur (Karnataka), Nagarhole (Karnataka), and Wayanad (Kerala) — forming the largest contiguous elephant population in the world.

What to see: Elephant herds (almost certain; multiple large herds found routinely), Spotted Deer, Gaur (Indian bison — very large; frequently visible), and occasional tiger sightings. The forest is dry deciduous (teak dominant) — different ecology from the shola forest above.

Safari format: Canter (minibus; Forest Dept) or Jeep, from Theppakadu (the main tourism centre). Forest permit booking via MP Forest Dept portal.

Ooty Chocolate and Local Shopping {#shopping}

Nilgiri home-made chocolate: Ooty has developed a cottage industry of home-made chocolate that’s become a distinct regional product. The temperature (Ooty averages 15–22°C) and the originally British dairy tradition in the hills combined to produce a chocolate-making culture in the 19th century colonial kitchens. Modern Ooty chocolate — sold in dozens of shops on Commercial Road and the bus stand market — is genuine milk chocolate rather than confectionery.

Also buy:

Where to shop: The Municipal Market (vegetable market area; also has fresh produce and craft) and the Commercial Road shops. Avoid the tourist-trap shops near the main bus stand.

Food in Ooty {#food}

Nilgiri Varkey: A flaky, layered biscuit-bread specific to the Nilgiri British-era bakery tradition — resembles a cross between a puff pastry and a savoury biscuit; eaten with jam or cheese.

Ooty hotel breakfasts: The Anglo-Indian breakfast tradition of boiled eggs, toast, and oatmeal porridge persists in the older guesthouses and hotels — oddly atmospheric in the hill-station context.

Local South Indian: Idli-sambar in any local hotel (the Tamil word for restaurant); specifically the Shinkow’s Chinese Restaurant (80+ year old institution; the oldest restaurant in Ooty; serves its own eclectic menu of Indian-Chinese fusion that’s become local ritual).

The Spencer’s bakery tradition: Several small bakeries still operating in Ooty’s older streets sell bread that reflects the British-era bakery culture.

Weekend trips to Ooty from Bangalore

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) {#faq}

Q: Is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train worth the detour? A: Yes, without question if you have 4–5 hours to spare. The Mettupalayam–Ooty journey is one of the finest railway experiences in Asia — the UNESCO designation is entirely merited. Book as far in advance as possible via IRCTC; first class seats are very limited and popular with both domestic and international travellers.

Q: How crowded is Ooty in summer (April–June)? A: Very. April–June peak season sees Ooty at near-capacity — traffic on the limited hill roads, accommodation fully booked, restaurant queues. If you want the hill station atmosphere without the summer crowd intensity, come October–February (accept cold evenings in exchange for space and quiet).

Q: Is Ooty or Coorg better for a long weekend from Bangalore? A: They serve different purposes. Coorg (see companion article) is about coffee estates, rivers, and jungle — lush and green. Ooty is about high-altitude plateau, tea gardens, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and the traditional hill station experience. Ooty is further (5–6 hours vs 4–4.5 hours for Coorg). Both are excellent; Ooty has more diverse activities.

Q: Can I see elephants near Ooty? A: Yes — Mudumalai National Park at the base of the Nilgiris (67 km from Ooty) has one of the densest elephant populations in India. The descent road from Gudalur toward Mudumalai frequently has elephant sightings near the road at dawn and dusk.
