Munnar Tea Gardens – How to Find the Most Instagrammable Viewpoints (2026)!

The road climbs into the mist and suddenly the valley below you is not a valley at all — it is a vast green quilt, every inch of it the same deep emerald, neatly trimmed, rolling over the hills in perfect geometric waves. This is what 250 square kilometres of tea estates look like from above. This is Munnar. And no filter makes it look like this.

Why Munnar’s Tea Gardens Are Uniquely Beautiful {#why-unique}

Munnar’s tea gardens are beautiful for a specific, technical reason: uniform-height trimming. Tea bushes are pruned to exactly the same height repeatedly, creating a smooth, unbroken green surface that rolls over the topography of the hills like a carpet. When the hills undulate — and in Munnar they undulate dramatically — the effect is a landscape of flowing green curves.

The tea variety grown here is primarily Camellia sinensis var. assamica, introduced by the British in the 1880s. Munnar’s high altitude (1,500–1,800m), cool temperatures, and high rainfall produce a distinctive flavour known as “high grown” tea — prized in the global tea market.

The estates are owned primarily by Kanan Devan Hills Plantations (KDHP), a company owned partly by its own workers since 2005. When you buy Kanan Devan or TATA Tea in a supermarket, much of it comes from these very hills.

The 10 Most Instagrammable Viewpoints {#viewpoints}

1. Top View Point (Munnar Town Centre) {#top-view-point}

Distance from Munnar town: 5 km (toward Rajamala/Eravikulam)

The first viewpoint most visitors encounter — a laid-out parking area with a well-known view across the valley where three streams (the Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundaly rivers) meet among the tea estates. Not the most dramatic in this list but an easy first stop.

Best time: Dawn (6–7 AM) before mist burns off
Entry: ₹10

2. Pothamedu View Point {#pothamedu}

Distance from Munnar: 6 km

Considered by many photographers to be Munnar’s best all-around viewpoint. The view encompasses a vast bowl of tea, coffee, and cardamom estates descending into a valley, with mountains on three sides. The evening light here turns the estates golden.

The road to Pothamedu passes through working tea estates — the drive itself is beautiful.

Best time: Late afternoon (3–5 PM) for golden hour light from the west
Entry: ₹20

3. Mattupetty Dam & Echo Point {#mattupetty}

Distance from Munnar: 13 km (toward Kundaly)

Mattupetty Dam creates a reservoir surrounded by tea estates and pine forest — a combination that looks almost Swiss. Boating is available (₹120–200 per person; 30 minutes). The adjacent Indo-Swiss Livestock Project farm can be visited.

Echo Point is 2 km further — a lake where shouting creates an echo from the hill (a dubious attraction visited for the lake views, not the shouting). The road beyond Echo Point toward Top Station is one of the most beautiful drives in Kerala.

Best time: Morning

4. Kolukkumalai — The Highest Tea Estate in the World {#kolukkumalai}

Distance from Munnar: 37 km (Suryanelli area)
Altitude: ~2,100 metres

This is Munnar’s hidden treasure and requires effort to reach — which is exactly why it’s worth it.

Kolukkumalai is the highest tea estate in the world at 2,100 metres, located on the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border above Munnar. The estate still operates with partly vintage equipment (a 1920s tea factory, still running) and produces a small quantity of extremely high-quality orthodox tea.

The approach involves a steep 4WD-only track from Suryanelli — only jeeps can navigate it. The view from the top of Kolukkumalai at sunrise may be the single best sunrise viewpoint in all of South India. You look out over a sea of clouds with the Tamil Nadu plains visible far below when the mist clears.

How to visit: Book a jeep from Munnar town or Suryanelli (₹2,500–3,500 per jeep, 6 people). Leave by 4:30 AM for sunrise. The factory tour includes tea tasting of estate-grown orthodox tea.

5. Eravikulam National Park {#eravikulam}

Distance from Munnar: 15 km
Entry: ₹180 (Indians), ₹540 (foreigners)

Home to the Nilgiri Tahr — a stocky mountain goat with backward-curving horns — the Eravikulam grasslands are spectacular. The rolling, open montane grassland covers the Rajamalai hills above the tree line. On a clear day, the view north toward the Tamil Nadu plains is extraordinary.

The Nilgiri Tahr population here is remarkably habituated to humans — they graze within metres of the walking trail. Photography is exceptional.

Also within the park: Anamudi (2,695m), the highest peak in South India, visible from the Rajamalai area.

Timing: 7 AM – 4 PM; closed during Neelakurinji blooming season (every 12 years; next: 2030). Eravikulam destination guide.

6. Tea Valley Resort Area Viewpoint Road {#tea-valley}

Distance from Munnar: ~8 km (Bison Valley direction)

The road toward Bison Valley passes one of the most photogenic stretches of tea estate in Munnar — a winding road cut through pure-green estates with hairpin bends that make excellent foreground elements for wide-angle photography.

This road is less trafficked than the standard viewpoint routes, meaning you can stop in the middle of the road for photographs without causing chaos.

7. Chinnakanal & Power House Falls {#chinnakanal}

Distance from Munnar: 20 km (toward Thekkady)

Chinnakanal is a small village on the Munnar–Thekkady road where tea estates meet forest. The Power House Waterfalls nearby drop into a gorge surrounded by estates. The combination of waterfall + tea garden in a single frame is distinctive.

Best time: Post-monsoon (October–December) for maximum waterfall flow

8. Suryanelli (Sunrise Valley) {#suryanelli}

Distance from Munnar: 35 km

The name says it: Suryanelli means “sunrise valley.” The eastern-facing valley catches the first light of dawn and has exceptional estate photography in the golden-hour window. This is also the access point for Kolukkumalai.

9. Anayirankal Dam {#anayirankal}

Distance from Munnar: 22 km (toward Rajamala)

A small, quiet dam reservoir rarely visited — largely unknown to the Instagram circuit. The tea estates reflected in the still water make for clean, minimalist compositions. Almost no crowds.

10. Top Station {#top-station}

Distance from Munnar: 32 km (toward Kodaikanal/Tamil Nadu border)
Altitude: ~1,700 metres

Top Station is the highest point accessible by road in Munnar, on the border with Tamil Nadu. The name comes from the upper end of a ropeway that used to transport tea from the Kanan Devan estates. The views into Tamil Nadu’s plains and the abstract pattern of the tea-covered hillside below you are exceptional.

The road from Munnar to Top Station via Mattupetty and Echo Point is one of Kerala’s most beautiful mountain drives. Munnar to Kodaikanal route.

Photo Tips for Tea Garden Photography {#photo-tips}

Light: The best light in hilly terrain is within the first 90 minutes after sunrise and the 60 minutes before sunset. Midday is flat and harsh.

Mist: Munnar gets regular morning mist that burns off by 9–10 AM. Shooting through light mist adds atmosphere — layers of misty ridges receding into the distance are a Munnar signature.

Foreground elements: Include a tea plucker, a winding road, or a tea factory chimney as foreground interest. Pure tea-estate shots without foreground context lose depth.

Drone rules: Drones require CAA/DGCA permission near Eravikulam National Park. Check current rules before flying.

Best focal lengths: Wide angle (16–24mm equivalent) for sweeping valley views; 70–200mm for compressed ridge-stacking effect.

How to Visit a Tea Factory {#tea-factory}

Several tea factories in the Munnar area offer guided tours. The process — withering, rolling, oxidation, drying, grading — takes about 45 minutes and ends with a tea tasting.

Travel Tips {#travel-tips}

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How many days do I need in Munnar? A: 2–3 days covers the main viewpoints, Eravikulam, and the tea factory. 4 days allows Kolukkumalai and a more relaxed pace.

Q: Is Munnar worth visiting in the monsoon? A: The estates are intensely green and beautiful in the rain, but photography is difficult and some roads are dangerous. October (immediately post-monsoon) is the best compromise — lush but accessible.

Q: What is Neelakurinji and when does it bloom? A: Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthianus) is a flowering shrub that carpets Munnar’s hills in purple once every 12 years. The last mass bloom was in 2018; the next will be in 2030. If planning around it, start watching for announcements from late 2029.

Q: Is Kolukkumalai worth the effort? A: Absolutely. If you only do one “extra” thing in Munnar beyond the standard viewpoints, make it Kolukkumalai at sunrise. The combination of highest-altitude estate, vintage factory, and spectacular cloud-sea view is unique in India.
