The best time to visit Shimoga is from October to February. The weather is pleasant, and the waterfalls are still active after the monsoon season.
You can reach Shimoga by train to Shivamogga Town (SMET), by bus from major Karnataka cities, or by road. Shivamogga Airport (QLH) has limited flights, so Bangalore (BLR) is the nearest major airport.
Entry fees vary. Government monuments typically charge rupees 10-50 for Indians and rupees 100-600 for foreigners. Temples are usually free. Safari and elephant camp fees are separate.
Shimoga is generally safe. Exercise caution in crowded areas for petty theft and negotiate auto-rickshaw fares. Avoid isolated spots after dark. Women traveling solo should be vigilant at night.
If you have limited time, you can skip the Shivappa Nayaka Palace Museum if you are not interested in history. Also, avoid visiting during peak summer (March-May) as it is very hot and waterfalls are dry.
Kannada is the primary local language. Hindi and English are understood by many people, especially in tourist-related services and hotels.
A low budget can be rupees 1500 per day, a mid-range budget is rupees 3500, and a high budget is rupees 7000 or more. This includes accommodation, food, and local transport.
Light cotton clothes are suitable for most of the year. Carry a light jacket for winter evenings. Dress modestly when visiting temples, covering shoulders and knees.
