Punducherry, often called Pondy, offers a unique blend of French colonial charm and South Indian culture.
The best time to visit Punducherry is from October to February. The weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing and beach activities.
You can reach Punducherry by flying to Chennai (MAA) and taking a taxi or bus. Puducherry (PDY) has a railway station and a bus stand with connections to major South Indian cities.
Most attractions like the French Quarter, Promenade Beach, and Sri Aurobindo Ashram are free. Paradise Beach has a nominal entry fee for the boat house (rupees 10) plus boat ride costs.
Punducherry is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. Exercise usual precautions, especially at night. Stick to well-lit areas and avoid deserted spots.
You can skip the Matrimandir interior if you do not have prior booking for meditation. Also, avoid the Promenade Beach during peak evening hours if you dislike crowds.
Tamil is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas. You will also hear French, especially in the French Quarter.
Your international SIM card may work, but roaming charges can be high. It is easy to get a local SIM card (Airtel, Jio) with your passport and visa copy from authorized stores.
A low budget is rupees 1500-2000 per day (hostel, street food, local transport). A mid-range budget is rupees 3500-5000 (mid-range hotel, good restaurants, scooter rental). High budget is rupees 7000+.
For temples and ashrams, dress modestly. Ensure your shoulders and knees are covered. Remove your footwear before entering.
