Mahe is a small French-influenced enclave of Puducherry, nestled within Kerala.
The best time to visit Mahe is from October to February. The weather is pleasant, dry, and ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
You can reach Mahe by air via Kannur International Airport (CNN), by train to Thalassery (TLY) or Kannur (CAN), or by bus/road via NH 66.
Most attractions in Mahe, including the Mahe Walkway, beaches, and religious sites like St. Teresa's Shrine and Pazhayangadi Mosque, have free admission.
Mahe is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. Exercise standard precautions, especially when out alone at night, and avoid isolated areas.
You must try Mahe Biryani, Kallumakkaya (Mussel) Curry, Appam with Stew, Puttu and Kadala Curry, and Pathiri. These are staples of Mappila cuisine.
Malayalam is the primary language. English and Tamil are also widely understood, especially in tourist-facing businesses.
If you are looking for bustling nightlife or extensive shopping, Mahe does not offer much. Skip if you prefer fast-paced, commercial tourist destinations.
When visiting temples or mosques, dress modestly. This means covering your shoulders and knees. Women may need to cover their heads in mosques.
