Madurai is an ancient temple city in Tamil Nadu, dominated by the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
The best time to visit Madurai is from October to February. The weather is pleasant and comfortable for sightseeing during these months.
You can reach Madurai by air (Madurai Airport IXM), train (Madurai Junction MDU), or bus. Major cities like Chennai and Bangalore have direct connections.
Meenakshi Amman Temple is free to enter, but a camera fee of rupees 50 applies. Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace costs rupees 10 for Indians and rupees 50 for foreigners. Most other temples are free.
Madurai is generally safe, but exercise caution in crowded areas and at night. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit streets. Dress modestly and be aware of your surroundings.
You can skip Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam if the tank is empty. Also, avoid buying souvenirs from pushy vendors right outside the Meenakshi Temple; prices are often inflated.
Tamil is the primary language. English is widely understood in tourist areas, hotels, and by auto-rickshaw drivers. Hindi is less common.
A low budget is rupees 1500 per day, a mid-range budget is rupees 3500, and a high budget is rupees 7000 or more. This excludes major shopping.
You must dress conservatively. Shoulders and knees should be covered. Men often wear dhotis or trousers. Women typically wear sarees or salwar kameez. Remove footwear before entering.
