Keshab is a small, peaceful town nestled in the agricultural heartland of Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal.
The best time to visit Keshab is from October to February. The weather is pleasant and cool, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the rural landscape.
You can reach Keshab by train to Medinipur or Kharagpur, then take a local auto-rickshaw or bus. By road, it is about 140km from Kolkata via NH16.
Most attractions in Keshab, such as the market, temples, and paddy fields, have no entry fees. Some activities like cooking sessions or cycle rentals have a cost.
Keshab is generally safe. However, it is a rural area, so exercise caution, especially after dark. Inform your homestay host about your plans and avoid isolated areas.
Bengali is the primary language. Hindi is also understood by many. English speakers might find it challenging outside of homestays, so learning basic Bengali phrases is helpful.
You can expect authentic Bengali cuisine, focusing on fresh, local ingredients. This includes fish curries, vegetable preparations like Shukto and Aloo Posto, and traditional sweets.
There might be one or two ATMs in the main village area, but it is advisable to carry sufficient cash. UPI payments are gaining traction but are not universally accepted.
Skip Keshab if you are looking for bustling nightlife, luxury resorts, or grand, well-preserved historical monuments. It is a destination for quiet, rural immersion.
