location_on Himachal Pradesh map North India ⛰️ Mountains Offbeat Destinations Chitkul Himachal Pradesh Baspa Valley Last Village Indo-Tibet Border

Chitkul is the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibet border in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district. Situated in the Baspa Valley, it offers stunning views of the Himalayas and a peaceful escape from city life. The village is known for its scenic beauty, apple orchards, and traditional wooden houses.

Chitkul is worth visiting for its pristine natural beauty and the unique experience of being in a remote Himalayan village. However, the journey can be long and challenging, and the limited infrastructure might not suit everyone. The high altitude can also be a concern for some travelers.

Reaching Chitkul requires a journey by road, usually from Shimla or Reckong Peo. Allocate at least 2-3 days to fully experience the village and its surroundings. Acclimatizing to the altitude is crucial upon arrival.

When To Visit

Best Time

May to October

10-25 degrees C

Pleasant and sunny weather makes it ideal for trekking and sightseeing. The days are warm, and the nights are cool.

Why Visit:

The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, and the views are unobstructed. Apple orchards are in full bloom during this time, adding to the scenic beauty. This is the only time of year to visit as the area is inaccessible during winter.

Tip: Expect more tourists during peak season, especially in May and June. Book accommodations and transportation in advance.

Shoulder Season

April & November

5-15 degrees C

The weather is colder, and snowfall is possible, especially in November. Some roads may be temporarily closed due to snow.

Why Visit:

Fewer crowds and potentially lower prices are the main draws. The landscape takes on a different charm with the onset of winter.

Tip: Check road conditions before traveling. Some guesthouses and restaurants may be closed.

Avoid

December to March

-10-5 degrees C

Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures make the region inaccessible. Roads are blocked, and the village is mostly deserted.

Why Avoid:

Avoid visiting during these months due to the harsh weather conditions and limited accessibility. The village is cut off from the rest of the world.

Note: There are virtually no tourist facilities open during this period. It's best to postpone your visit.
