Bagerhat serves as a primary entry point to the Indian Sundarbans.
The best time is from October to March. The weather is pleasant, dry, and ideal for boat safaris and wildlife viewing. Avoid the monsoon season from June to September due to heavy rains and rough waters.
The nearest major airport is Kolkata (CCU). From Kolkata, you can take a train to Canning (CG) or a bus/taxi to Godkhali. From Godkhali, you must take a boat to reach Bagerhat and other Sundarbans areas.
Entry fees for Indians are typically rupees 60, and for foreigners, it is rupees 300. This is in addition to boat hire charges and guide fees. Fees for watchtowers are separate, usually rupees 30-40 for Indians and rupees 150-200 for foreigners.
Bagerhat and the Sundarbans are generally safe for tourists, but you must follow guide instructions, especially regarding wildlife. Do not venture into the forest alone. Be aware of petty scams like overcharging for local transport. Carry mosquito repellent and stay hydrated.
Skip expecting luxury resorts or vibrant nightlife; this is a remote nature destination. Also, skip trying to explore the core forest areas without a registered guide and proper permits, as it is dangerous and illegal.
Bengali is the primary language spoken by locals. Hindi is also understood by many. English is spoken by tour operators and some staff at eco-resorts, but not widely by the general population.
It is difficult to get a SIM card in Bagerhat itself. It is best to purchase a local SIM card (Jio or BSNL are recommended for better coverage) in Kolkata before you travel to the Sundarbans region.
A low budget would be around rupees 1500 per day for basic accommodation and food. A mid-range budget is rupees 3500 per day, including comfortable stays and organized tours. A high budget can go up to rupees 7000 per day for premium eco-resorts and private tours.
Within villages, you can use auto-rickshaws or cycle rickshaws for short distances. For all inter-village travel and exploring the national park, boats are the only mode of transport. Most tours include boat travel.
